The Parthenon, one of Nashville's oldest cultural institutions, was built in 1897 to celebrate Tennessee's centennial. It is a full-scale replica of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece from 438 B.C.E. (before common era). Nashville's Parthenon includes a re-creation of the 5th-century B.C.E. Athena Parthenos sculpture. Athena stands almost 42 feet tall, the largest piece of indoor sculpture in the Western world.
