Walter O. Evans Collection of African American Art

Albany Museum of Art is pleased to announce Walter O. Evans Collection of African American Art will be on display in the Haley Gallery from March 9 through May 27, 2001. The 80-plus piece exhibition presents a unique opportunity to take a comprehensive look at some of the most important African American artists of the 19th and 20th centuries via an historical perspective.

The Walter O. Evans Collection of African American Art Includes work by 19th century landscape masters Edward Mitchell Bannister and Robert Scott Duncanson as well as Henry Ossawa Tanner and marble sculptor Mary Edmonia Lewis. These earlier works are finely-balanced by contemporary art by Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Charles Wilbert White, Aaron Douglas and many others. The privately-owned collection has been touring the nation for ten years and has been shown in over 25 museums and galleries. The collector, Detroit surgeon Dr. Walter O. Evans, is an avid collector of African American art, rare books, and historical documents pertaining to the African American experience. He was featured in Art and Antiques magazine as one of the nation's Top 100 Collectors in 1991, 1992, and 1993. He is actively involved with the Jacob Lawrence Catalogue Raisonne Project, where he serves on the board of directors. Several of the contemporary works in the traveling exhibition were commissioned by Evans.
