The privately-owned collection has been touring the nation for ten years and has been shown in over 25 museums and galleries. The collector, Detroit surgeon Dr. Walter O. Evans, is an avid collector of African American art, rare books, and historical documents pertaining to the African American experience. He was featured in Art and Antiques magazine as one of the nation's Top 100 Collectors in 1991, 1992, and 1993. He is actively involved with the Jacob Lawrence Catalogue Raisonne Project, where he serves on the board of directors. Several of the contemporary works in the traveling exhibition were commissioned by Evans.
