Artwork Images Project For Published Essays

In 2022-23 we accessed and added to the TFAOI.ORG site over 1,300 images of copyright free representational American artworks from Wikimedia Commons (WC) and directly from the online collections of museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum.

For specific regional museums, we searched for American paintings as a subset of collections within WC search results.

We also reviewed essays published in Resource Library to find names of deceased artists within the essays. Then we searched in WC for images for them. When images were found they were placed in the Distinguished Artists catalog and in a footnote of each essay. 

For each relevant essay, we placed in the Resource Library Editor's Notes a header for:

1. an image relating to one cited artist:

"Following is an example of art created by (artist). The artwork shown may not be specific to this essay. The image was obtained via Wikimedia Commons, which believes it to be freely available for presentation here.  Another source readers may find helpful is Google Images."

2. another for multiple artists:

"Following are examples of artworks created by artists referenced in the above essay. Artworks and/or photographs shown may not be specific to this essay and are likely not cited in it. All images were obtained via Wikimedia Commons, which believes the images to be freely available for presentation here.  Another source readers may find helpful is Google Images." or

 

"Following are examples of representational artworks created by artists, or photographs of artists, referenced in the above article or essay. Images may not be specific to this article or essay and are likely not cited in it. Images were obtained via Wikimedia Commons, which believes the images to be freely available for presentation here.  Another source readers may find helpful is Google Images."

At the bottom of each page containing a copyright free image from WC, we placed a .jpg identification tag for the image.
