Many images we'll see in the museum are sourced from Wikimedia Commons, accompanied by some from physical museums' websites, designated as free of copyright. More images are sourced from Art museums, galleries and art centers publicity articles provided to TFAO's Resource Library for their exhibits. When the museum feature them, there's link to the articles. Even more images are from Topics in American Art.
Wikimedia Commons image legends may say "Public domain, via (source of image)." If an artwork or photo is in the public domain via Wikimedia Commons, there will be one or two asterisks following the word "Commons." One asterisk means that the copyright for an artwork has expired or an image is provided with no restrictions. Two asterisks means that an artwork or photo is in the public domain and its image is available with some restrictions. Here are the icons for both types:
