Anchorage Artist Garry Mealor

A solo exhibition of large format watercolors by Anchorage artist Garry Mealor opened at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art December 12, 1999. Mealor is an accomplished watercolorist whose work has won numerous awards both in Alaska and outside the State. The show will remain on view through January 2, 2000. Mealor's show includes thirty 40" x 60" transparent watercolors on paper. His subject matter varies from still lifes to self-portraits. Mealer's technique is graphic; he appreciates communication with the viewer. But, the watercolors take a life of their own, going beyond the artist, as the viewer sees relationships according to where he/she lives, thinks, and believes. Garry Mealor's paintings have been in more than 100 national and regional juried exhibitions over the last 10 years. He is a 1992-1993 Jackson Pollock - Lee Krasner Foundation Grant Recipient, was awarded a Florida Individual Artist Fellowship in 1991, and was a fellow at the Vermont Studio Center in 1994. Acquired by numerous private, corporate, and public buyers, his paintings are in the holdings of the Neville Public Art Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin; the New Orleans World Trade Center; the Florida Art in State Buildings Program; and the City of Tampa Public Art Collection. Mealor moved to Anchorage in 1994 from Florida where he was on the faculty of the Ringling School of Art and Design. His work "Stall Shadows" won the Watercolor Award in the 1996 All Alaska Juried Art Exhibition and was purchased by the Anchorage Museum for its permanent collection.
