George Pfeifer: North Dakota Landscapes
On exhibit in the atrium at the Plains Art Museum are four paintings by artist George Pfeifer. Each painting depicts a distinct landscape near Casselton, North Dakota: the sandhills near Leonard, a pond near Alice, the Sheyenne River Valley and the Dalrymple farm. The paintings were a gift to the Museum from Norwest Bank North Dakota, Casselton Office and will be exhibited through June 30, 2000.
In
1982, the State Bank of Casselton was remodeled by Charles Grommesh of September
Design in Fargo. His design included commissioning George Pfeifer to create
these paintings. To complete the commission, Pfeifer toured the Casselton
area to get ideas for his paintings. Norwest Bank purchased the State Bank
of Casselton in 1998. Technological improvements to the bank required removal
of the paintings which resulted in their donation to the Plains Art Museum.

Pfeifer was born in Fargo in 1946. He attended school at St. John's University and the Minneapolis School of Art and Design. He has exhibited extensively in this region and his work is included in many public and private collections. Pfeifer's paintings are primarily of the landscape, particularly the upper Midwest.
The
Plains Art Museum's Permanent Collection includes sixteen additional pieces
by the artist, including watercolor paintings, limited edition prints and
drawings.
The exhibit was made possible in part by funding from the Minnesota State Arts Board through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and by the Lake Agassiz Arts Council, City of Fargo.
