Center for Creative Photography at University of Arizona Commences 25th Anniversary

The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona, a world-renowned museum and research institution dedicated to photography as an art form and cultural record, is commemorating its 25th Anniversary with special exhibitions, publications and educational programs throughout 2000 and 2001. Founded in 1975 by photographer Ansel Adams and then-University of Arizona President John P. Schaefer, the CCP holds more archives and individual works by 20th-century North American photographers than any other museum in the nation. "Our 25th Anniversary offers the perfect time for the world to take a fresh look at the CCP and the unique opportunities that we offer the public through unprecedented access to our remarkable collection," said Acting Director Nancy Lutz. Curator of Exhibitions & Collections Trudy Wilner Stack added, "These summer exhibitions show the abundant range of photographers with distinct artistic visions in our collection, and will give visitors a deeper understanding of the Center's rich history of important acquisitions."

The Anniversary year begins on Friday, June 23, 2000, at 5:00 PM with the opening reception for two exhibitions, "Our Quarter Century: The University of Arizona's Center for Creative Photography Turns Twenty-five," and "Into Our Prime: Acquisitions Since 1996." On view from June 24 through September 17, 2000, these exhibitions are presented along with a symposium on the last twenty-five years of creativity in the arts, as well as other educational programs. In the Anniversary year, which runs through the end of 2001, the CCP will present eleven exhibitions, several publications, and dozens of educational programs and special events, each accenting aspects of the CCP's history, mission, collections and activities. "Our Quarter Century: The University of Arizona's Center for Creative Photography Turns Twenty-five" features an historical overview of the last twenty-five years of photography culled from the CCP's extensive collection. The exhibition features a photograph made in each year between 1975 and 2000 -- alongside a timeline of the institution's growth and significant events -- to illustrate the many trends, processes and artistic visions of recent photographic history and the changing world that photography reflects and depicts. Photographers in the exhibition include Richard Avedon, Sarah Charlesworth, William Christenberry, Peter Goin, Judith Golden, Mark Klett, Helen Levitt, Robert Mapplethorpe, Richard Misrach, Maggie Taylor, Tseng Kwong Chi, Jerry Uelsmann, and Carrie Mae Weems, among others.

As a companion exhibition, "Into Our Prime: Acquisitions Since 1996" commemorates the CCP's extensive collection of art and research materials that includes photographs, negatives, albums, work prints, manuscripts, contact sheets, correspondence and memorabilia. This exhibition illustrates the CCP's 25-year commitment to the development of archives and the recognition of contemporary photography. "Into Our Prime" will give visitors a look into the last five years of important purchases and gifts from collectors, dealers, artists and their estates. It will include photographs and/or archival materials from Nubar Alexanian, Eugène Atget, Harold Edgerton, Victor Landweber, David Levinthal, Danny Lyon, Sally Mann, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Hansel Mieth and Otto Hagel, Inge Morath, Dorothy Norman, and Jim Pomeroy, among others.
