Loving Life: Recent Paintings by Marge Keary

The Cahoon Museum of American Art will present the special exhibition "Loving Life: Recent Paintings by Marge Keary" from July 11 through Aug. 19, 2000. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 14.

The 31 still lifes and landscapes painted in oils for this one-person~show convey some of the same air of joy and directness that West Barnstable artist Marge Keary projects as a person. This is true whether the subject is a vase of sunflowers, a basket of red onions, an old windmill near Oyster Harbors, a boathouse in Cummaquid, a regatta off Falmouth Heights or two boys picking cranberries. The artist sees form as the keystone of every painting, "where the subject matter is built up as a sculptor works with clay." Still, her heart-gladdening color may be what you notice first. "My aim is to use my knowledge, talent and creative powers to express my love for life, especially as it is lived and enjoyed on Cape Cod," says Keary, who, in conjunction with the exhibition, will give gallery talks at 11 a.m. July 21 and Aug. 4.

After majoring in painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, she went to Paris on scholarship to study with famed artist Fernand Leger (1881-1955). (Just for fun, "Loving Life" will include a painting she did in his studio at age 22.) While in Paris, she also earned a diploma from Academie Montmartre. Later, back in Boston, she earned a bachelor's degree in teaching and an MFA from Tufts University.

Keary retired to the Cape about 20 years ago following a 22-year career as an art instructor in Needham public schools. She quickly established her reputation as a Cape artist and for many years operated the Paint Box Art Gallery in Osterville. She has exhibited at the Cape Cod Conservatory and the Old Selectmen's Building in West Barnstable, the Creative Arts Center in Chatham and Falmouth Artists' Guild and has previously had work on view at the Cahoon Museum. She has won awards for entries in shows at Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable and the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York City. Her work is carried by Wilson Gallery in Dennis, Birdsey on the Cape in Osterville and Willoughby Gallery in Edgartown.

This show has been underwritten by a grant from the Elizabeth B. McGraw Foundation.
