Zhe-zhou Jiang, Chinese Ink and Watercolor Paintings

September 5 - October 22, 2000

Zhe-zhou Jiang, born in China and trained in traditional Chinese painting at the Beijing College of Fine Arts, synthesizes traditional techniques with contemporary imagery in his ink and watercolor compositions. A long-time resident of Philadelphia, Jiang studied with Will Barnett and Sidney Goodman at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and has developed a distinctive and elegant style combining the graceful line of Eastern painting with a Western approach to subject matter. The Philadelphia and New York skylines, evocative landscapes, and graceful horse figures are featured in the installation along with a selection of portraits of important American figures. Zhe-zhou Jiang has participated in numerous juried exhibitions and his work has been featured in over 20 one-person exhibitions. His paintings are represented in over 400 public and private collections including the China History Museum of Beijing, the Wharton School & Library of the University of Pennsylvania; Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley Law Firm; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Zulitzky, Mr. and Mrs. Steward Resnick, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Faulkner III, and Bally's Park Place, Atlantic City.

Zhe-zhou Jiang is the founder of the Huaguang Art & Cultural Center, Philadelphia and holds membership in the Philadelphia Water Color Society, Center of Arts in Southern New Jersey, Chinese Artists' Groups, and other elective organizations. A fully illustrated book on Jiang's paintings was published in Hong Kong in 1999.

A reception for the artist is being held September 10 from 5 to 7 pm at the museum.
