Inside and Out: Scenes of American Life from the Addison Collection / On the Street: Photographs from the Permanent Collection

The Addison Gallery of American Art has one of the most important collections of American art in the country. As part of ongoing efforts to make the range and depth of its collection known to the public, the Addison is presenting two thematic exhibitions drawn from this rich artistic resource in the Fall of 2000. Inside and Out: Scenes of American Life from the Addison Collection focuses on depictions of everyday American life. The selected paintings, prints, and drawings, dating from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, document family holidays, domestic activities, interactions of adults and children, and the range of work and play both in urban and rural settings. These genre works, ranging from formal family portraits, to informal scenes of workers in the landscape, to popular prints produced for publications and mass distribution, represent artists such as Eastman Johnson, Winslow Homer, Enoch Wood Perry, John Quidor, Thomas Worthington Whittredge, John Sloan, George Luks, Currier & Ives, and Louis Prang.

On the Street: Photographs from the Permanent Collection features examples of the museum's extensive holdings of photography and focuses on artists who combine documentation and personal viewpoint to depict the full range of urban American life. Capturing the rich fabric of the city, approximately fifty photographs, dating from the 1940s to the present, will include work by Louis Faurer, Helen Levitt, Garry Winogrand, and Dawoud Bey, among others.
