The Marshall Collection

Art lovers won't want to miss a special exhibition at the Huntsville Museum of Art of 53 stunning turn-of-the-century landscapes and portraits from the private collection of Dr. William H. Marshall. The paintings in "The Marshall Collection," which opens July 23, 2000 and runs through October 29, 2000 at the Museum, represent American art between impressionism and modernism. The period between 1880 and 1925 was a time in which a gamut of styles swiftly succeeded one another, from the lingering Hudson River School tradition to a Matisse-like expressionism. The Marshall Collection contains beautiful works by Americans studying abroad, such as Theodore Robinson's 1886 oil Child with Geese and Theodore Earl Butler's 1909 painting of Lili Reading. These were two of the first American artists who worked in Giverny and came under the influence of Claude Monet. Paintings of Gilded Age women and their children depicted as symbols of refinement and in languorous repose are also a key part of "The Marshall Collection." Women artists including Helen Hamilton, Pauline Palmer, and Harriet Randall Lumis are also in the exhibition. (right: William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), Woman with Roses, 1895, oil on canvas)

Other featured prominent artists include William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Charles Webster Hawthorne, and Theodore Wendel.

The exhibition is sponsored by SOUTHBank, Lyn & Danny Wiginton, G.W. Jones & Sons Real Estate Investment Company, Inc., and Betsy & Peter Lowe. It is organized by the R.H. Love Galleries, Inc. in Chicago, Ill., with which the Museum has enjoyed a special relationship for several years.
