Winter Scenes
Snow and ice may be on the way, but you can
enjoy their beauty in warmth at the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover.
Winter Scenes, a special exhibition scheduled through January 28,
2001, explores the variety and challenges of winter landscape painting.
Regional artists Walter Launt Palmer, Raphael Senseman, Frank E. Schoonover,
Walter Elmer Schofield, Fred Wagner and Alfred Jacob Miller are all represented.

Memorable works include: Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church,
New York, painted by Guy Carlton Wiggins,
is 
well-known
for evoking the charm and nostalgia of early 20th-century life. Winter
Landscape, painted in 1924 by Jonas Lie, elicited much positive comment
from contemporary critics who attributed the appeal of winter subjects to
him on his Norwegian heritage. On loan from the Historical Society of Delaware
is Old Barley Mill on the Brandywine, painted by Henry Price, where
skaters glide effortlessly on the frozen river near the mill. The Red
Bridge by Fred Wagner captures the industrial spirit of Philadelphia

About the Biggs Museum of American Art's Curator:
Roxanne Stanulis has been the curator and assistant director
of the Biggs Museum of American Art for over two years. In addition to caring
for the permanent collection, Ms. Stanulis also coordinates the Museum's
temporary exhibitions. Another major project that she is overseeing is the
publication of the Museum's catalogue of the permanent collection.
Previously Ms. Stanulis worked in the Department of American
Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts and coordinated a special exhibition
at the University Gallery of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She
holds an M.A. in art history from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst,
and a B.A. in art history from Michigan State University. She specialized
in American art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
