The Painted Page: Children's Book Illustrations
by Charles Santore

Celebrated chiIdren's book illustrator Charles Santore will be the
subject of a one-person exhibition this fall at The Noyes Museum of Art.
Entitled "The Painted Page: Children's Book Illustrations by Charles
Santore," this exhibit will feature over fifty original drawings and
watercolors that were used to illustrate books containing some of history's
best-loved children's stories. Mr. Santore is widely regarded as one of
the finest artists working in children's book illustration today. (left:

Since
venturing into children's book illustration fifteen years ago, Santore has
reinvigorated some often illustrated classic fables and stories. To date
he has illustrated the Complete Tales of Peter Rabbit and Other Stories,
published by Running Press in 1986, and Aesop's Fables, The Wizard of
Oz (a story which is celebrating it's hundredth anniversary this year),
The Little Mermaid, and Snow White, all published by Random
House between 1988 and 1999. Some of Santore's signature illustrations from
these titles have been used as backdrops for major theatrical and television
performances. In 1997 Random House also published an original fairy tale
- William the Curious: Knight of the Water Lilies - which Santore
both authored and illustrated. His next book project, A Stowaway on Noah's
Ark will be published later this fall and will be available for purchase

Mr.
Santore has won many awards, including the prestigious Hamilton King Award
from the New York Society of Illustrators, a gold medal from the New York
Society of Publication Designers, a 1998 Storytelling World Honor from Storytelling
magazine and an "Edger" from the Mystery Writers of America. His
works have been widely collected by major museums, such as the Museum of
Modern Art in New York City, as well as by private collectors around the
world. In 1992 his illustrations were honored with a one-person exhibition
at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Mr. Santore
is also a noted collector of American decorative and folk arts and has authored
two definitive volumes on the American Windsor chair. (left: Snow

A
native Philadelphian, Charles Santore graduated from the Philadelphia Museum
School of Art (now the University of the Arts) in 1956 and got his start
as a freelance illustrator for advertising agencies and art services. Among
his clients was N. W. Ayer, then one of the largest advertising agencies
in the world. Starting in the 1960s, Mr. Santore's work appeared in magazines
such as Ladies' Home Journal, Cosmopolitan and National
Geographic, just to name a few. Mr.. Santore is also widely known for
the numerous celebrity portraits he produced for the cover of TV Guide

Charles Santore will be available to sign copies of his
children's books at the Noyes Museum of Art's Fall Opening Reception on
Saturday, October 7, 2000 from 3 to 6 PM. Also held in conjunction with
The Printed Page exhibition will be a special Creative Sparks
Program entitled "Young Illustrators Workshop." Participants
(children ages 6 to 12) in this workshop will look at a series of children's
books and will then learn techniques to create their own illustrations.
