The Woman as Subject: Selections from the Permanent Collection of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts
Among the summer exhibition offerings at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, The Woman as Subject: Selections from the Permanent Collection highlights approximately 40 works from the permanent collection.
The Woman as Subject, on view now through August 30, 2003, explores ways in which women have been portrayed in art by both male and female artists. Focusing primarily on the 19th and 20th centuries, this exhibit includes prints and photographs that examine some of the common themes through which the artists' views of women have been expressed. Issues of class and the "traditional" roles of women as well as the concept of woman as model, goddess, or Madonna are explored. The exhibit also includes images that probe the changing roles of women in today's society as well as works that explore more personal narratives.
Culled from the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts's extensive holdings of over 1700 works on paper, this exhibition features rarely seen images by artists such as Kathe Kollwitz, Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt, Philip Evergood, Diane Arbus, Raphael Soyer, Dorthea Lange. and Edward Weston.
