The essay was originally published as the catalog for an exhibition on the
painters of the Boston School. The exhibition was organized in cooperation
with The Banks Gallery (www.thebanksgallery.com) in Portsmouth, New
Hampshire in November 2006 and subsequently traveled to Chester College
of New England's Wadleigh Gallery (www.chestercollege.edu) in February 2007. (right:

About the Author:
Christopher Volpe teaches art history and American literature at Chester College of New England and Franklin Pierce College. In February 2007, he guest curated Chester College's "A Legacy of Beauty: Paintings in the Boston School Tradition," comprised of selected works from The Banks Gallery's "Boston School Legacy." In addition to teaching poetry at the University of New Hampshire as well as the history of art at Chester and Franklin Pierce, he occasionally delivers public lectures on various aspects of nineteenth-century American landscape and figurative painting. He is also the co-founder of Penhallow Press, an independent publisher specializing in poetry and letterpress printing based in the Seacoast region of New Hampshire.
