Melanie Parke proposed and helped establish the Sleeping Bear Dunes Artist-in Residence program in 1993. She has also proposed thirty new programs, four of which have been accepted. Each program which she has helped establish differs slightly. The parks ask the artist to give a presentation and donate a work representative of their stay. The artists receives housing for three to four weeks, travel reimbursement within the park, and in some cases a modest meal stipend.

Partners for Artist in Residence Programs in National Parks Mission Statement:
P.A.I.R. Programs in National Parks is a volunteer, non-profit, grass roots organization, dedicated to supporting artists in the creation of their work. By removing them from their everyday obligations, P.A.I.R. helps arrange uninterrupted time to pursue their creative endeavors in cooperating National Park Service Areas.
The Artist in Residence Programs uphold a positive, progressive, and collaborative spirit, nurturing the solitary spark of inspiration while providing a base for direct community work and the common good.
P.A.I.R. has a long range vision of promoting sustainability of natural resources and elevating of works created from the programs, and developing A.I.R. programs in national parks globally, to foster cultural diversity, understanding and tolerance through international exchange.
