Title: Twilight and Reverie - California Tonalist Paintings (1890-1930)
Author(s): Harvey L. Jones
"More then 60 paintings by 17 painters were selected to illustrate the themes and salient features of the Tonalist style as it was practiced in California. Research revealed that California Tonalism was the dominant style in the art communities of the San Francisco Bay Area and along the Monterey Peninsula form 1890 through the 1920s." "The current exhibition provides the welcome opportunity to show 38 works in oil and watercolor from the Museum's own collection of California paintings; the remainder of the show is drawn form public and private collections of Northern and Southern California." "It is our hope that this exhibition and catalogue will introduce a new audience to this unjustly ignored area of painting, one that was crucial to the art community of this area one hundred years ago." Harvey L. Jones, Senior Curator.
