Watercolors from the Permanent Collection
At the Farnsworth Art Museum
"Different Strokes," an
exhibition of 25 watercolors from the Farnsworth Art Museum's permanent
collection, will open on April 10, 1999 and remain on view until September
6, 1999 in the Craig Gallery. This exhibit features watercolors by renowned
American artists such as Winslow Homer, George Luks, John LaFarge, John
Marin and Maurice Prendergastamong others.
The
earliest work, Captain Charles Randall's "View of Mt. Desert Island,"
dates from 1778, and the exhibit includes work through the 1980s. These
watercolors
have been selected to highlight a diversity of techniques and styles and
to inspire a broader appreciation of the medium. Due to fragility and conservation
concerns, watercolors are less frequently exhibited than oils. This exhibit
provides a special opportunity to view the Farnsworth's outstanding watercolors,
many considered gems of the collection.
