The Civil War Naval Scenes of Xanthus Smith

The Civil War Naval Scenes of Xanthus Smith includes more than 50 paintings and drawings of naval scenes during the Civil War ranging from Admiral Farragut's forces surrounding New Orleans to the departure of U.S.S, KEARSAGE from Boston Harbor. Among numerous battles highlighted in the show are the Battle of Hampton Roads, the capturing of Port Royal and Rear Admiral Samuel Francis DuPont's attack on Charleston, SC.

In addition to the artwork featured in the exhibition, several pieces related to the Civil War will also be on display including a battle plan for the attack on Mobile Bay, a telescope used by Admiral Farragut in the skirmish at Mobile Bay and a ship model of U.S.S. NEW IRONSIDES.

The Civil War Naval Scenes of Xanthus Smith is the final part of a multi-site exhibition of the Smith Family's work. Throughout 1998 the artistry of Russell Smith, his wife Mary Priscilla Wilson Smith and Mary Russell Smith, Xanthus' sister, have been shown at the Woodmere Art Museum, Bucknell University and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. Currently, an exhibition of related Civil War Posters is also on display at the Union League of Philadelphia through Nov. 14, 1998.

Independence Seaport Museum is pleased to be working with local institutions such as the Union League of Philadelphia, the Atwater Kent Museum and Winterthur, all of which have loaned pieces to the exhibit. In conjunction with The Civil War Naval Scenes of Xanthus Smith , Independence Seaport Museum will host several programs for the entire family focusing on the Civil War and its relation to maritime history.
