Wesley Dennis and Misty of Chincoteague
Since it was first published in 1947, Marguerite Henry's classic children's book, Misty of Chincoteague, has delighted millions of young readers and horse lovers around the world. Through October 31, 1999 the Kentucky Horse Park will proudly host The Misty of Chincoteague Foundation's traveling exhibition of archival photographs and selected illustrations relating to Henry's wonderful stories of the ponies of Chincoteague Island, Virginia.
The exhibit centers on selected drawings by illustrator Wesley Dennis from Henry's books, Misty of Chincoteague, Sea Star and Stormy along with archival photographs of their real life subjects. Misty of Chincoteague is possibly the best known and most popular of all Wesley Dennis' works for young readers. According to many fans of Marguerite Henry's books, the art of Wesley Dennis is a major factor that makes them classic favorites. Dennis successfully combined the author's literary art with the literal images to produce what we now see in charming black and white pencil drawings and color paintings.
The exhibition is on display in the Park's Visitors Information Center, and is included with admission to the Park. The Kentucky Horse Park is located on I-75, at exit 120, four miles north of Lexington.
