American Academy of Women Artists (AAWA) Fifth Annual Signature Exhibition and Workshop

August 7 - September 6, 1999

Many of the country's finest women painters and sculptors are members of the American Academy of Women Artists (AAWA). AAWA will exhibit two shows at the Bennington Center for the Arts, from August 7 to September 6. There will be a juried show displaying the work of many of the signature members, and a show of miniatures representing the current membership.

The American Academy of Women Artists includes a diverse array of nationally prominent women artists. Southwestern painter Maria Sharylen focuses on the women and families of Mexico; Californian Louise DeMore's impressionistic landscapes capture the changing light of sky and sea; sculptor Catherine Ferrell's playful dolphins express the energy and sleek beauty of ocean life; and Nancy Howe of nearby East Dorset, Vermont captures the atmosphere of the New England landscape in winter.

Across this diversity of subjects and styles, the AAWA artists are united by a common spirit. As AAWA's founder Maria Sharylen states, "we are a sisterhood of professionals who share similar interests, adversities, dreams, and goals, such as an enduring love for life and a passion for our work. We have joined forces to project a fresh new image of the artist, and to elevate the perception of women in visual arts."

An opening reception with several of the AAWA artists will be held on Saturday, August 7 from 5-7 PM. The public is invited to attend.
