Frederick R. Weisman: Los Angeles Collector

The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University in Malibu will present an exhibition, Frederick R. Weisman: Los Angeles Collector, from August 21 through October 3, 1999. Works will be on view in the museum's Gregg G. Juarez Gallery, West Gallery and Mezzanine Gallery.

Frederick R. Weisman (1912-1994) was a businessman and art collector who had a great impact on the cultural life of Los Angeles. Regarded as one of the top 200 art collectors in the world, he amassed a collection of contemporary art that reflects the vitality of our times. He favored uplifting art and instinctively preferred works that were whimsical, thought-provoking and vibrant. (left: Andy Warhol, Portrait of Frederick R. Frederick R. Weisman: Los Angeles Collector features over 40 major works by America's and Europe's most interesting contemporary artists, and covers movements ranging from 1960's Pop Art to 1990's Postmodernism. Special emphasis is on Southern California artists Weisman befriended, such as Ron Davis, Joe Goode, John McCracken, Ken Price, and Ed Ruscha. Other artists on view include Richard Artschwager, Roger Brown, Christo, Red Grooms, Duane Hanson, Matt Mullican, Nam June Paik, James Rosenquist, Frank Stella, Tom Wesselmann, and Andy Warhol.
