Jane Piper: Paintings and Drawings from the Artist's Estate
The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is presenting the work of Philadelphia painter Jane Piper at the School Gallery, 1301 Cherry Street, beginning October 22, 1999 and running through November 14, 1999. "Jane Piper: Paintings and Drawings from the Artist's Estate" features approximately thirty works of art--twenty paintings and ten works on paper. This exhibition is a full survey of her productions spanning an entire career--from the early 1940s to 1991.
Jane Piper (1916-1991) was one of Philadelphia' s finest painters. In the mid-1930s she studied with Daniel Garber at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later at the Barnes Foundation, and then studied privately with Earl Horter, Hans Hofmann and Arthur B. Carles. Her first solo exhibition was held in 1943 at Philadelphia's Robert Carlen Gallery and was soon followed by thirty-four solo exhibitions in Philadelphia, New York City and Cape Cod.
For many years, Piper was an influential teacher at the University of the Arts. She also taught at the Pennsylvania Academy and the New York Studio School. Piper's style has been described as "space structured by color, using still-life motifs." Her paintings and drawings are in numerous museum collections throughout the United States including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Delaware Art Museum; and the Carnegie Institute Museum of Art, Pittsburgh. The exhibition is open daily, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
To complement the PAFA exhibition, works from Jane Piper's estate and recent works by her students will be on view at The Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Gallery at the Wayne Art Center beginning October 10 and running through October 29, 1999. "Jane Piper and Her Influence" includes work by Jan C. Baltzell, Marie-Theres Berger, Charles Gaffney, Dennis Gillespie, Bill Scott, Karen Segal and Brad Thorstensen, three of whom are PAFA alumni.
