New Art for a New Millennium: New Mexico 2000
Key trends in contemporary New Mexico art will be the focus of New Mexico 2000, opening at the Museum of Fine Arts October 8, 1999. The juried show is a continuation of a 47-year tradition at the Museum of Fine Arts, alternating between a Southwestern focus and a strictly New Mexico show.

Museum curators invited New Mexico artists to submit works in all media and from all artistic modes. The curators received more than 5,000 slides representing wildly divergent works created between 1997 and 1999.
The 73 pieces chosen - ranging from traditional retablos, pottery, photographs and oil paintings to contemporary furniture with words, jars with political commentary, an installation of postcards and wall pieces of steel -- comprise New Mexico 2000. In addition, all 5,520 submitted slides will be exhibited and available for viewing.
The juried exhibition seeks to acknowledge the wide range of outstanding artistic expression in New Mexico at the turn of this century. In their jurors' statement, jury members said the selection was difficult, but in the end, some common themes emerged - including New Mexico's intense environment, the politics of tourism and the metaphor of the human figure.
Aline Brandauer, Curator of Contemporary Art; Joseph Traugott,
Curator of 20th Century Art; and Steve Yates, Curator of Photography, served
as jurors.
