Margaret Lefranc (1907-1998)
The
Swope Art Museum will host an exhibition of Margaret Lefranc's paintings
from October 21 to October 28, 1999. There will be an opening reception
on Thursday, October 21, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the museum.
Margaret Lefranc, a color expressionist with classical training, had a remarkable career spanning 76 years as a painter, illustrator, and editor. This exhibition is being held in conjunction with an Indiana State University class called "Women Artists. (left: Young Woman in Blue (Self-Portrait), 1929, oil on canvas, 29 x 21 1/4 inches, Photo: James Hart)
Margaret Lefranc said of her art: "From 13 to 26 years
of age, I lived in Paris and Berlin observing the growth of art away from
naturalism and impressionism. Every conceivable experimentation in the creative
arts was taking place, from cubism, expressionism, surrealism to abstraction,
and then some....The ominous shadow of Nazism forced me to return to the
U.S., the country of my birth where I used documentary, anecdotal, impressionist,
expressionist, and abstractionist methods to express the bonding and joy
I felt about the land."
This exhibition is sponsored by the Margaret Lefranc Art Foundation.
