The Schooner Yacht Coronet: An Air of Greatness
The Newport Art Museum opened an exhibition titled The Schooner
Yacht Coronet: An Air of Greatness on June 25, 1999. The exhibition,
organized by John Summers of the International Yacht Restoration School
of Newport (IYRS). includes a rigged model of Coronet, mahogany ship's doors
mounted with elegant stained glass windows, a log book, as well as paintings
of the ship by 19th century and contemporary artists. Currently owned by
IYRS, Coronet was built in 1885 for industrialist Rufus T. Bush and has
been called the oldest, largest and most original grand yacht in the world.
Arthur Curtiss James owned the yacht in the 1890s; he sailed it twice around
Cape Horn. The yacht itself can be seen at the IYRS dock on lower Thames
Street.
The Schooner Yacht Coronet: An Air of Greatness can be seen at the Newport Art Museum through September 12, 1999.
The museum is located at 76 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI. The museum's buildings
are handicapped accessible. Limited free parking on the museum grounds.
