Milton Avery: Paintings from the Collection of the Neuberger Museum of Art
Sunday Riders, 1929; Seated Figure on Deck Chair, 1942; Collection of the Neuberger Museum of Art
The exhibition, Milton Avery: Paintings from the Collection of the Neuberger Museum of Art comes from the State University of New York, Purchase, accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog. Avery scholar Barbara Haskell, curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, wrote the catalog essay.
The exhibition, opening April 9, 1999, brings together 29 works from 1939 through 1961. Among them are classic Milton Avery motifs: intimate groupings of friends, family portraits, seascapes and landscapes with his characteristic flattened picture plane, color harmonies and respect for his subjects.Avery (1885-1965), who painted everyday subjects while his artist colleagues in the United States were absorbed by social and political issues, remained lyrically representational even as he used non-realistic colors to push his work to the boundaries of the abstract.
"He considered art as a vehicle neither of polemic nor of narrative, but of poetic reverie," writes Haskell. "In his pursuit of an aesthetic vocabulary that would embody his own gentle and quiet relationship with the world, he invented chromatic sonorities that had never been experienced before...he created a color poetry of gripping beauty and lyricism."
The exhibition, organized by Neuberger Museum Director Lucinda H.. Gedeon, remains at the Museum of Fine Arts through June 27, 1999 and is supported in part by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Endowment Fund.
The Museum of Fine Arts is part of the Museum of New Mexico,
a division of the New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs. The Georgia O'Keeffe
Museum is a private, non-profit institution in close association with the
Museum of New Mexico.
