Joseph Reboli Retrospective

The work of well-known Long Island artist, Joseph Reboli (b. 1945), will be on view at The Museums at Stony Brook from May 30 through September 7, 1998 in the exhibition, Joseph Reboli Retrospective. The exhibition consists of 55 works, gathered from across the nation, spanning Joseph Reboli's thirty-year career.

Although Reboli's work is described as realism, he is often focused on the abstract qualities that are created through spatial arrangement, color, pattern, technique, light and shadow. Reboli's subjects are often assemblages of different experiences and motifs combined to form a unified concept. Reboli is drawn to subjects both man-made and natural, often combining the two. Recurring themes of architecture, landscape, seascape, and still life are apparent in his work.

Reboli began painting at a young age and by the time he was in high school was determined to pursue a professional career in art. Reboli attended the Pairer School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut from 1964 to 1967. Early influences were contemporary realist, Andrew Wyeth, and abstract impressionists, Franz Klein and Willem De Kooning, whose works stimulated "Pop Art" of the 1960's. As a result, Reboli experimented with embracing the theories and compositional elements of abstract art.

Upon graduation from art school, Reboli enlisted in the Army and was assigned to a military exhibit unit stationed in Alexandria, Virginia. During this time, Reboli also pursued his own artwork and began exhibiting at Gallery North in Setauket, Long Island and at the M Street Gallery in Washington D.C.

At the age of 30, Reboli had his first one-man show at the Christopher Gallery in Manhattan and the Wolff Gallery in New Jersey. Reboli's work attracted the attention of a critic writing for Art World magazine, who described Reboli's paintings as capturing the "stillness of nature and a mood of solitary contemplation.

During the 1980s, Reboli was represented by Gallery Henoch in SoHo which organized numerous solo exhibitions of his work exposing his talents on a previously unprecedented scale to corporate collectors such as: Chemical Bank, Citibank North America, and Kidder Peabody, as well as to serious collectors of art throughout the United States and Europe.

A recent publication of The Museums at Stony Brook, the hardcover book Joseph Reboli accompanies the exhibition. The 84-page book includes an essay about the artist, written by the Museums' President, Deborah J. Johnson, an exhibition record, and fifty color plates of Reboli's paintings.
