George Bellows. Love of Winter

July 12 - September 13, 1998

George Bellows. Love of Winter features 23 of Bellows' greatest winter paintings. These works, created between 1907 and 1915, form a very definite group within the artist's oeuvre, and constitute, in many experts' opinions, the most critical moments in the artist's development. This is the first exhibition to concentrate exclusively on George Bellows' winter paintings. The goal of the exhibition is to establish the importance of these paintings in Bellows' development from spirited tonalist to exuberant modernist.

The exhibition will also feature 12 examples of winter paintings by many of Bellows' contemporaries, including American Impressionists and Modernists such as Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, George Luks, Ernest Lawson, John Sloan, Rockwell Kent, and George Riddle.

Bellows was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1882, the son of an architect/builder. After graduating from Central High School in 1901, he enrolled at Ohio State University where he served as a yearbook illustrator and played on the basketball and baseball teams. Bellows moved to New York in 1904 and quickly became a protege of Robert Henri who encouraged the young artist to paint scenes from the city's everyday life. Bellows soon became one of this century's most important and beloved realist artists.

This exhibition was organized by the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida. This exhibition and its associated programs are sponsored by The Huntington National Bank. Promotional support provided by Ohio Magazine and WCBE 90.5 FM.

Major works for this exhibition are borrowed from many museums, including the National Gallery of Art, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Metropalitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Diego Museum, and The Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. Private collections have also been extremely generous with loans to this exhibition.
