Burchfield-Penney Art Center
Charles Burchfield's Studio
An installation which might be of particular interest to Resource Library readers is Charles Burchfield's Studio, a recreation of a corner of the artist's Gardenville, New York, studio, which will open on April 9, 1998.
The Center acquired material from the studio when the property containing the studio and family home was sold after the artist's death in 1967. The original acquisition included the studio's wooden furniture and custom-built shelving. The Center later acquired other important studio objects including the artist's brushes, which he altered himself, pots of pigments, palettes, boxes of hardware, handmade folders for storing drawings, handmade bins used to soak works on paper for removal from their backing boards, a taxidermic owl and two crows, and items Burchfield collected, including a birch bark canoe and what he called a turtle-backed rock.
The studio recreation will be supplemented with an exhibition of the artist's work and an interpretive display providing biographical information, information about the studio, and illustrations of the artist's unique painting techniques and work habits through photographs, a viewer-activated video installation, and an interactive hypertext program.
